What is HEMA and why does it matter?
HEMA (2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate) is a monomer widely used in gel nail polish formulas to improve adhesion. However, HEMA is also one of the most common causes of acrylate contact allergy in nail products. Sensitization can occur from repeated skin contact with uncured gel, and once sensitized, a person may react to a broad range of acrylate-containing products — not just the one that triggered the sensitivity.
This is why skin-contact avoidance during application is critical with any gel product, HEMA-free or not.
"HEMA-Free" — what it means and what it doesn't
When a gel formula is labeled HEMA-free, it means the specific monomer HEMA has been removed from the formula. However:
- Other acrylate monomers — including HPMA (Hydroxypropyl Methacrylate), Di-HEMA TMPDC, and urethane acrylates — may still be present and can cause sensitization in susceptible individuals.
- Sensitization risk comes from uncured gel contacting skin, regardless of which specific monomers are in the formula.
- HEMA-free formulas are often recommended for clients who have already developed a HEMA allergy, but they are not universally safe for all allergy-prone individuals.
- Customers with a known acrylate sensitivity should consult a dermatologist or a qualified nail professional before using any gel product.
What is HPMA and which products contain it?
HPMA (Hydroxypropyl Methacrylate) is a monomer structurally similar to HEMA. It is commonly used in HEMA-free gel formulas as an alternative adhesion agent. Like HEMA, HPMA is an acrylate and carries a sensitization risk if it contacts uncured skin repeatedly.

What is TPO and why are some formulas TPO-free?
TPO (Diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide) is a photoinitiator — the ingredient that triggers polymerization (curing) when gel is exposed to UV or LED light. TPO and related phosphine oxide photoinitiators have been associated with sensitization concerns in occupational and repeated-exposure settings.
Our TPO-free formulas use alternative photoinitiators (such as bisacylphosphine oxide or Type I/Type II photoinitiator blends) that can still offer full cure under standard LED/UV exposure times. "TPO-free" is a formulation choice; it does not affect the basic curing process or require different lamp equipment.
Skin-contact avoidance — why it's essential
- Apply in thin, controlled layers. Flooding the cuticle area increases skin contact and sensitization risk.
- Cap the free edge on every layer to minimize edge lifting and seepage.
- Clean up flood-outs before curing — use a clean brush or orangewood stick to remove any gel that touches skin before placing under the lamp.
- Never cure gel that is on the skin. Curing gel into the skin accelerates sensitization significantly.
- Wear nitrile gloves when applying gel to others, and recommend clients inform you of any sensitivities before their appointment.
- Ventilate the workspace adequately when working with gel products regularly.

General curing tips:
- Apply thin, even layers — thick layers may cure on the surface but remain soft underneath, leading to lifting or premature chipping.
- If your lamp has a "low heat" or "gentle cure" mode, use it for sensitive skin or full-coverage nails to reduce the heat spike during cure.
- Inhibition layer (the tacky surface after curing) is normal — do not wipe between color coats unless your system requires it.
- Always cure base coat and top coat fully at the lamp times above.
- Curing times may vary by nail shape, product layer thickness, and lamp age. Older bulbs may require extended cure times.
These are general guidelines. Refer to the specific product instructions for any product with a different recommended cure time.
Who should consult a professional before using gel products?
- Anyone with a known or suspected acrylate allergy — including reactions to dental acrylics, orthopaedic bone cement, or previous gel nail products.
- Anyone who has experienced redness, itching, swelling, or blistering around the nail area after a gel application.
- People with eczema, psoriasis, or other chronic skin conditions affecting the hands or nails.
- Professionals who apply gel products daily without gloves and have noticed skin changes.
